Subject: Notification of two Safety Recalls 4420F and 4520F 2020 CX-30 and Mazda3
Dear Mazda Dealer Partners,
Mazda Motor Corporation has decided to conduct two Recall Campaigns impacting the 2020 Mazda3 and CX30 built at MMVO. Please see the descriptions, models and VIN Ranges below for both recalls.
Safety Recall 4420F: 2020 CX-30 and 2020 Mazda3 Front Brake Caliper Bolts May loosen
Affects 23,960 US vehicles
Models | Subject VIN range | Subject production date range |
CX-30 built at MMVO Mazda3 built at MMVO | 3MVDM LM 100339- 132854
3MZBP LM 124464- 138941 | From October 22, 2019 through March 6, 2020 |
STOP DELIVERY: There are currently 6,702 vehicles in dealer inventory under Recall 4420F.
These vehicles cannot be delivered to customers until the vehicle is repaired.
Concern Outline:
On certain subject vehicles, it is possible that the front brake caliper mounting bolts may loosen and fall off, as the front brake caliper mounting bolts may not have been tightened to the proper torque specification. Loose or missing brake caliper mounting bolts may cause reduced braking performance and caliper interference with wheel rotation, resulting in loss of vehicle control and increasing the risk of a crash.
For all subject vehicles:
The brake caliper bolt tightening torque will be checked. If the torque is not adequate, the front caliper mounting bolts will be tightened to the proper specification. If in the rare occurrence where bolts are missing, the affected front brake caliper will be replaced using new parts.
Safety and Emissions Recall 4520F: 2020 CX-30 AWD Fuel Leak from Rear of Vehicle
Affects 12,096 US vehicles
Model | Subject VIN range | Subject production date range |
CX-30 AWD built at
MMVO | 3MVDM LM 104188- 137005 | November 1 3, 2019 through
March 24, 2020 |
STOP DELIVERY: There are currently 5,059 vehicles in dealer inventory under Recall 4520F. These vehicles cannot be delivered to customers until the vehicle is repaired.
Concern Outline:
On certain subject vehicles, the fuel evaporative vent hose may not be connected to the fuel sender unit. If the vent hose is disconnected, when fully refueling the vehicle, liquid fuel will eventually fill the charcoal canister, resulting in a leak, which may increase the risk of a fire in the presence of an ignition source. Additionally, the engine may stall while driving, increasing the risk of a crash.
For all subject vehicles:
The fuel evaporative vent hose in the vehicle fuel tank will be inspected. If the hose is found to be disconnected, the hose will be connected to the fuel sender unit. On sold vehicles, the charcoal subcanister will be replaced.
Owner Notification:
Mazda will notify owners of affected vehicles for both recalls no later than August 7, 2020.
Vehicles will display in eMDCS as “Not Launched” on June 1 5, 2020 but can be repaired as outlined above.
Important Safety Notice:
The National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act prohibits the delivery of any subject vehicle without performing the necessary repair for defects or failures. Failure to perform applicable recalls before delivery can result in extensive dealer fines and penalties from the Federal Government. Therefore, you must complete this recall for all affected vehicles in your inventory prior to delivery.
To help you effectively perform these recalls, Mazda has developed the following resources:
- Parts and Warranty Information and Repair procedures will be posted on MGSS by June 1 5, 2020.
- For Warranty questions, contact the Warranty Hotline at (877) 727-6626, Option 3.

- For parts questions, contact the Dealer Assistance Group at (877) 727-6626 Option 2.
- For Recall questions please fill out the Dealer Recall Help Form located on MX-Connect under the Warranty Tab.
Please make certain the appropriate personnel in your dealership are aware of these resources and are familiar with the details of these recalls before responding to customer inquiries. We apologize for any inconvenience these recalls may cause you and your customers. Your understanding and support in carrying out these campaigns are greatly appreciated.

Subject: RE: Safety Recalls 4420F and 4520F – Parts and Repair Updates
This message is to clear up any confusion regarding the notification of these two recalls and the repairs that may be required.
Safety Recall 4420F: 2020 CX-30 and 2020 Mazda3 Front Brake Caliper Bolts May loosen
It is expected that over 99.9% of the vehicle population will only require the front brake caliper bolts to be tightened. Therefore, if a technician finds a vehicle in which the front caliper bolt is missing they will need to contact Dealer Recall Help to receive authorization to replace the affected front brake caliper assembly. A photo will be required for documentation of that VIN. The Dealer Recall Help team will contact the DAG to order the part for you.
Safety and Emissions Recall 4520F: 2020 CX-30 AWD Fuel Leak from Rear of Vehicle
It is expected that over 99.8% of the vehicle population will only require an inspection of the fuel evaporative hose connection.
If the fuel evaporative hose is found to be disconnected, there are two procedures depending on whether the vehicle has been retailed or is still in dealer inventory.
Retailed Vehicles: If a technician finds a vehicle with the fuel evaporative vent hose disconnected, they will need to contact Dealer Recall Help to receive authorization to replace the charcoal sub-canister and some related parts. A photo will be required for documentation of that VIN.
Non-Retailed Vehicles (Dealer Inventory): If the vehicle has not been fully filled with fuel, there is no contamination of the charcoal sub-canister. Therefore, if a technician finds a disconnected fuel evaporative hose, just reconnect the hose to close the recall. The Dealer Recall Help team does not need to be contacted. Final copies of the parts and warranty information and repair procedures will be posted to MGSS as quickly as possible. They should be completed by June 1 7th at the latest.
If there is a need to order any other parts for this recall, please fill out the Dealer Recall Help Form located on MX-Connect under the Warranty Tab. The DAG will only process orders previously approved by Dealer Recall Help.
As a reminder for these two recalls vehicles in dealer stock in Not Launched status can be inspected or repaired and the warranty claim should be submitted as soon as possible to close the recall. If you have a customer demanding the recall repair you can inspect or repair those vehicles as well.
For additional questions, please don’t hesitate to submit a Dealer Recall Help request.
Please make sure the appropriate staff at your dealership are aware of these orders.

Travis Young

IMPORTANT SAFETY RECALL
2020 CX-30 and 2020 Mazda3 – Front Brake Caliper Bolts May Loosen and Fall Off Safety Recall 4420F
NHTSA Campaign Number 20V-346
July 2020
This notice applies to your vehicle: VIN _______________
Dear Mazda Owner:
This notice is sent to you in accordance with the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act.
Mazda Motor Corporation has decided that a defect which relates to motor vehicle safety exists in certain 2020 model year CX-30 and Mazda3 vehicles, produced from October 22, 2019 through March 6, 2020. If you received this notice, your vehicle is included in this Recall.
What is the problem?
On certain subject vehicles, the front brake caliper mounting bolts may loosen and fall off. Loose or missing brake caliper mounting bolts may cause reduced braking performance and/or caliper interference with wheel rotation, resulting in loss of vehicle control and increasing the risk of a crash. Drivers may hear abnormal grinding or rattling noises due to the brake caliper contacting the wheel and possibly other vehicle components. This defect is due to a manufacturing assembly process error whereby certain front brake caliper mounting bolts may not have been tightened to the proper torque specification.
What will Mazda do?
Protect What Is Important To You
Your Mazda dealer will inspect the tightening torque of front brake caliper mounting bolts. If the torque is not adequate, the dealer will tighten the brake caliper mounting bolts to the proper specification. If any bolts are missing, the affected brake caliper will be replaced using new parts with properly tightened mounting bolts. The inspection and repair will be performed at no cost to you.
How long will it take?
It will take approximately half an hour to complete the inspection and tightening of the mounting bolts, if required. In the unlikely event that replacement of the brake caliper(s) is necessary, it will take approximately one hour to complete; however, your Mazda dealer may need your vehicle for a longer period of time.
Mazda will provide alternate transportation, if needed, when your vehicle is at an authorized Mazda
dealership for a recall repair. Schedule an appointment with an authorized Mazda
dealer so they can discuss and accommodate your needs.
What should you do?
Mazda is concerned about your safety, and we encourage you to contact any authorized Mazda
dealer to schedule an appointment to have your Mazda
vehicle inspected as soon as possible. You do not need to bring this notice to the dealer, but it may assist in the check-in process.
Where is the closest Mazda dealer?
To locate your nearest Mazda dealer, visit our website www.MazdaRecallInfo.com, or call our Customer Experience Center at (800) 222-5500, option #4.
Moved or no longer own this vehicle?
If you have moved or no longer own your Mazda vehicle, please complete and mail the enclosed postage-paid Information Change Card (no envelope required) as soon as possible. This enables us to update our records and notify the current owner.
Federal law requires that any vehicle lessor receiving this recall notice must forward a copy of this notice to the lessee within ten days.

IMPORTANTE CAMPAÑA DE SEGURIDAD
2020 CX-30 y 2020 Mazda3 – Pernos de “calipers” de frenos delanteros pudieran estar sueltos y desprenderse.
Campaña de seguridad 4420F
Número de campaña de la NHTSA 20V-346
Agosto 2020

Chronology of Defect
Front brake caliper bolts may loosen and fall off on MY 2020 Mazda3 and MY2020 CX-30
February 27, 2020: Mazda received first field report of “Grinding noise occurred due to missing caliper installation bolts from brake caliper.” from the U.S.
On that day, Mazda detected two vehicles having this failure in the vehicle assembly plant in Mexico. Abnormal noises were detected during dynamic inspection on the testing track. In each of these cases, two bolts for mounting the brake caliper completely loosened and detached. The parts supplier immediately began to investigate this failure.
February 28, 2020 through March 14, 2020: Mazda inspected the tightening torque of brake calipers on vehicles stored in inventory and found that the caliper mounting bolts on five specific vehicles were loose.
March 6, 2020: Parts supplier began a tightening torque check of all manufactured calipers at assembly line-off to prevent loosened caliper bolts from leaving their facility as an interim corrective action.
March 31, 2020: Parts supplier determined the root cause of this defect. In the assembly process of the brake caliper, a manufacturing process error involving tightening torque occurred, starting from the production launch time of new parts for another OEM. While addressing the process failure for the other OEM, some brake calipers for Mazda were not properly tightened due to an improper assembly process countermeasure. During this time, Mazda
also studied the risk to vehicle safety if the caliper was able to become detached. As a result, Mazda
found that this defect may cause a decrease in braking force or wheel lock-up due to interference between the caliper and the wheel.
April 10, 2020: As a permanent countermeasure for mass-production, the parts supplier revised the assembly process and equipment to verify proper tightening torque is achieved during automated fastener installation operation.
June 5, 2020: Mazda held a Quality Audit Committee meeting to review all available information to date and determined to conduct a proactive field action on certain MY2020 Mazda3 and MY2020 CX-30 vehicles. No accidents, injuries, or deaths have been reported as a result of this defect.
