Mazda

) is recalling certain 2019 Mazda3 vehicles. The seat cover material on both front seats may interfere with the head restraint lock release button, causing it to stick in the release position and not allow the head restraint to lock into place.
Remedy
Mazda
will notify owners, and dealers will install spacers at the bottom of the lock release buttons on both front seat head restraints, free of charge. The recall began August 20, 2019. Owners may contact Mazda
customer service at 1-800-222-5500, option 4. Mazda
’s number for this recall is 3819F.

CONDITION OF CONCERN
On certain Mazda3 vehicles, the seat cover material of the front driver and passenger seatbacks, may interfere with the head restraint lock release button. This may cause the button to be stuck in the released position and in this condition, the head restraint can be moved freely, without the ability to lock the vertical height adjustment at the desired position.
If a crash were to occur, the head restraint could become loose and injure occupants in the vehicle.
OUTLINE OF REPAIR
Install plastic support plates at the bottom of the lock release buttons on both front seat head restraints to prevent the seat cover material from interfering with the lock release button.
Note: Some vehicles may have the support plate on one side (driver or passenger side). If this is the case, install a support plate on the other side (no support plate) only.

REPAIR PROCEDURE
ACTION TO BE TAKEN
*1 Some vehicles (about 700 VINs) had felt installed which was a temporary measure to avoid pushing the release knob.
*2 Some vehicles (about 360 VIN) were installed with the support plate on the driver seat or passenger seat.
Check the felt at the pole guide.
Note: Felt was installed in some vehicle (about 700 VINS) which was a temporary measure to avoid pushing the release knob
- Confirm if the seat has the felt.
- Use a regular flat screwdriver and apply masking tape to prevent damage the trim and pole guide.
- Place the clean micro fiber between the pole guide and the front seat-back.
- Insert the screwdriver between the pole guide and the felt. Push slowly in a vertical direction with the screwdriver to remove the pole guide felt.
- Take the felt with a finger and remove the micro fiber. Be sure to remove all of
the felt.
Check to see if the support plate has been installed already on the driverโs seat or passengerโs seat.
- Check to see if the support plate is installed on the driver seat and passenger seat by observing from VIEWS A, B, C.
- If the support plate has not been installed on the driverโs seat and passenger seat, install the support plate at both sides. Go to โInstall the support plate at driver seat and/or passenger seat.โ
- If the support plate has been installed already at driver side or passenger side, no further action is required at its side. Install the support plate to the other seat Go to next procedure.
Install the support plate at driver side and/or passenger side.
- Verify the trim color and support plate is same.
Note: It doesn’t matter to install the support plate by front or back.
- Insert the support plate by the front area.
- Insert half of the support plate.
- While pressing the bolster, turn it counterclockwise.
- While pressing the bolster, fit the ribs of the pole guide with the support plate.
- Install the support plate on the other side (passenger side).
- Repeat procedure 2 to 6 then go to procedure 7.
- If already installed at another side, go to procedure 7.
โป Support plates must be installed at both side.
- Install the head rest at driver seat and passenger seat.
- Pull up the head rest at highest lock position. Verify the head rest does not come out completely at highest lock position.
- Push the head rest down direction and verify that the head rest does not unlock each notch.

Motor Corporation has decided that a defect which relates to motor vehicle safety exists in certain 2019 model year Mazda3 vehicles produced from January 15, 2019 through May 22, 2019.
If you received this notice, your vehicle is included in this Safety Recall.
What is the problem?
On certain Mazda3 vehicles, the seat cover material of the front driver and passenger seatbacks, may interfere with the head restraint lock release button. This may cause the button to be stuck in the released position and in this condition, the head restraint can be moved freely, without the ability to lock the vertical height adjustment at the desired position. If a crash were to occur, the head restraint could become loose and injure occupants in the vehicle.
What will Mazda
do?
Protect What Is Important To You
Your Mazda
dealer will install support plates at the bottom of the lock release buttons on both front seat head restraints to prevent the seat cover material from interfering with the lock release button. The repair will be performed at no cost to you.
How long will it take?
It will take approximately half an hour to complete the repair; however, your Mazda
dealer may need your vehicle for a longer period of time.
Mazda
will provide alternate transportation, if needed, when your vehicle is at an authorized Mazda
dealership for a recall repair. Schedule an appointment with an authorized Mazda
dealer so they can discuss and accommodate your needs.

Concern Outline:
Loss of engine power and/or engine stall may occur during certain driving conditions due to a software error in the computer that controls engine operation. On certain subject vehicles, the powertrain control module (PCM) software controlling the hydraulic valve clearance adjuster may operate improperly when transitioning from cylinder deactivation to full cylinder activation modes. As a result, an intake valve rocker arm may come out of position and make contact with internal engine parts, which may cause an engine misfire and/or Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL) illumination. In the worst case, loss of engine power or engine stall without the ability to be restarted can occur while driving, which may increase the risk of a crash.
Owner Notification:
Mazda
will notify 198,000 owners of affected vehicles by first class mail on August 20, 2019. Vehicles will be in Open status and owners will be asked to bring their vehicle to the nearest Mazda
dealership for a software update to the PCM.
