2005-2006 AND 2008 TRIBUTE – ENGINE STALLS ON ENGAGEMENT / STOPPING
APPLICABLE MODEL(S)/VINS
2005-2006 and 2008 Tribute vehicles equipped with Automatic Transaxle (ATX) built from Aug. 1, 2004 to Feb. 15, 2007
Engine stall when coming to a stop or when engaging the ATX into drive or reverse.
This condition may be intermittent, and often occurs after extended drives.
There may be no diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) stored.
This concern may be caused by internal wear of the torque converter, which prevents it from unlocking. A modified torque converter is available.
REPAIR PROCEDURE
- Check automatic transmission fluid (ATF) level and add if necessary.
- Inspect and repair all non-transaxle codes according to Workshop Manual.
- Use M-MDS or Scan Tool to monitor PID (Parameter Identification) for TC_SLIPACT as the stall is occurring.
- If slip is greater than 20 RPM, stalling is not transaxle related. Repair according to Workshop Manual procedure for engine stalling.
- If slip is less than a 20 RPM, with the transmission in park or neutral, torque converter clutch (TCC) internal failure is the most likely cause. Proceed to Step 4.
- Raise vehicle safely on hoist.
- Drain automatic transmission fluid (ATF) from transaxle assembly.
- Remove automatic transaxle assembly according to Workshop Manual.
NOTE: Check the rotation of the torque converter in the bell housing. A failed torque converter will be difficult to rotate.
- Remove torque converter from bell housing.
- Install new torque converter and reinstall automatic transaxle assembly according to Workshop Manual.
- Refill automatic transaxle assembly with MERCON V ATF.
- Back-flush transaxle cooler system.
- Inspect for proper ATF level.
