Engine Coolant Leak Behind Alternator – 2007-2015 Mazda 3.7L

2007-2015 CX-9, 2009-2013 MAZDA6 3.7L – ENGINE COOLANT LEAK BEHIND ALTERNATOR

Engine Coolant Leak Behind Alternator

Coolant leak from the left side of the engine.

This may be caused by a water pump failure.

The water pump is located under the engine front cover and mounted to the block. The water pump weep hole is adjacent to a 13.5 mm (0.531 in) cup plug.

This plug and weep hole create a reservoir for normal coolant seepage and evaporation. Every water pump will have some leakage.

Dampness and crusting around the weep hole is acceptable and an expected result of normal engine operation. Coolant leakage amounts great enough to puddle will require water pump replacement.

Note: Coolant leakage at the cup plug is unlikley. In most cases, the leakage is caused by a water pump failure.
