Mazda
North American Operations (Mazda
) is recalling certain 2018 CX-9 vehicles. The wiring harness may disrupt electrical communications and disable the passenger frontal air bag, turn signals, and/or engine starting system.
Remedy
Mazda
will notify owners, and dealers will repair the wiring harnesses, free of charge. The recall began July 26, 2019. Owners may contact Mazda
customer service at 1-800-222-5500, Option 4. Mazda
’s number for this recall is 3419E.

A. REPAIR PROCEDURE
Overview
- Slide the front seats to the full rear position.
- Disconnect the negative battery cable.
- Cut the wires at eight (8) joint connectors located in four (4) areas and crimp them using tube sleeves and SST 49JP-03-001. (Locations on repair may be in different order.)
- Connect the negative battery cable and perform the initialization procedures. Refer to MGSS online or the workshop manual “NEGATIVE BATTERY TERMINAL DISCONNECTION/CONNECTION”.
- Start the engine and confirm if any DTCs are not stored. If they are stored, clear it according to MGSS online or the workshop manual.
- Install the removed parts in the reverse order of the removal.
- Slide the front seats to the original position.

C-47 and C-48
C-51 and C-52
C-54 and C-55 – Please review specific note in the repair procedure and updated warranty information.
Repair on C-43 and C-44
- Locate Joint Connector C-43 and C-44 (Refer to “Joint Connector Locations”)
- Open the rubber boot and cut the tape to gain access to joint connectors C-43 and C-44.

NOTE: Take care not to cut wires.
- Remove Joint Connector C-43 and C-44 by cutting the wiring harness at the joint connectors.
- Remove 15mm insulation from the wiring harness.
- Twist the “L”(blue) wires, exposed copper ends together. Repeat this step for the “P” (pink) wires.
- Insert the tube sleeve.
NOTE:
- Use 1.25 tube sleeve for 2 or 3 wires
- Use 2.0 tube sleeve for 4 wires
- All exposed copper should be seen at the tip and also at the insulation.
- Use crimping tool to crimp the “L” (blue) wires together as shown. Repeat this step for the “P” (pink) wires.
NOTE:
- Crimp once at the center of the tube sleeve. Crimping at the edge may damage wires.
- Press the handles until it releases by itself.
- Confirm proper crimping by holding the crimped tube sleeve with one hand and pulling on each wire with your other hand.
- Insert protective cap. Repeat this step for the “P” (pink) wires.
- Secure the protective cap with tape. Repeat this step for the “P” (pink) wires.
- Fix the protective caps to the wire harness using a zip tie and cut off the excess material.
Repair on C-47 and C-48
- Remove the LH trunk side trim. Refer to MGSS online or the workshop manual “TRUNK SIDE TRIM REMOVAL/INSTALLATION”.
- Locate Joint Connector C-47 and C-48 (Refer to “Joint Connector Locations”)
- Remove Joint Connector C-47 and C-48 by cutting the wiring harness at the joint connectors. (Refer to step 3 image)
- Use crimping tool to crimp the “L” (blue) wires together as shown. Repeat this step for the “P” (pink) wires. (Refer to step 4-10).
NOTE:
- Crimp once at the center of the tube sleeve. Crimping at the edge may damage wires.
- Press the handles until it releases by itself.
- Fix the protective caps to the wire harness using a zip tie and cut off the excess material. (Refer to step 11 image).
Repair on C-51 and C-52
- Remove the dashboard under cover. Refer to MGSS online or the workshop manual “DASHBOARD UNDER COVER REMOVAL/INSTALLATION”.
- Locate the C-51 and C-52 connecters.
- Carefully cut the tape while holding the connectors and wires in place.
NOTE:
- An art knife (or equivalent blade) is recommended since it is not easy to access the connectors.
- Take care not to cut wires.
- Remove Joint Connector C-51 and C-52 by cutting the wiring harness at the joint connectors. (Refer to step 3 image)
- Use crimping tool to crimp the “L” (blue) wires together as shown. Repeat this step for the “P” (pink) wires. (Refer to step 4-10).
NOTE:
- Crimp once at the center of the tube sleeve. Crimping at the edge may damage wires.
- Press the handles until it releases by itself.
- Fix the protective caps to the wire harness using a zip tie and cut off the excess material. (Refer to step 11 image)
Repair on C-54 and C-55 NOTE: It is recommended to remove the steering shaft bolt B455-32-099B and replace with a new bolt when repairing these connectors. This removal gains additional access for the repair.
- Remove the RH and LH console side wall panels. Refer to MGSS online or the workshop manual “SIDE WALL REMOVAL/INSTALLATION”.
- Locate Joint Connector C-54 and C-55 (Refer to “Joint Connector Locations”)
- Carefully cut the tape while holding the connectors and wires in place.
NOTE:
- An art knife (or equivalent blade) is recommended since it is not easy to access the connectors.
- Take care not to cut wires.
- Pull the joint connectors to the passenger side for repair reaching under the HVAC Unit from the passenger side.
- Remove Joint Connector C-54 and C-55 by cutting the wiring harness at the joint connectors.
- If the connectors cannot be pulled out enough for the work, proceed to next step. If it can be, proceed to step 37.
- Remove the bracket (1) and release a harness clip (2) and two clips for harness protector (3)
NOTE: When harness protector clips are damaged, replace the harness protector with new one.
- Release harness clips near C54 and C55 (1) and harness protector (2)
- Release two harness clips at the passenger side
NOTE: This clip cannot be installed again.
- If necessary, remove the lower joint bolt for the intermediate shaft. Refer to MGSS online or the workshop manual “INTERMEDIATE SHAFT REMOVAL/INSTALLATION”. Then go to procedure 35.
If not necessary to remove the lower joint bolt for the intermediate shaft, go to procedure 36.
- Pull the rear harness to the passenger side.
- Pull Joint Connector C-54 and C-55 to passenger side reaching under the HVAC Unit from the passenger side.
- Remove Joint Connector C-54 and C-55 by cutting the wiring harness at the joint connectors. (Refer to step 3 image)
- Use crimping tool to crimp the “L” (blue) wires together as shown. Repeat this step for the “P” (pink) wires. (Refer to step 4-10.)
NOTE:
- Crimp once at the center of the tube sleeve. Crimping at the edge may damage wires.
- Press the handles until it releases by itself.
- Fix the protective caps to the wire harness using a zip tie and cut off the excess material. (Refer to step 11 image)
- Install the lower joint bolt [R] for the intermediate shaft if removed at procedure 34.
- Reconnect Battery and reinitialize power windows and liftgate and set radio stations
B. CAMPAIGN LABEL INSTALLATION
- Fill out a blue “Campaign Label” (9999-95-065A-06) with Campaign No: “3419E”, your dealer code, today’s date.
- Affix it to the hood or bulkhead as shown:
- Return the vehicle to customer.

CONDITION OF CONCERN
In certain Mazda
CX-9 vehicles, malfunctions can occur in the passenger frontal air bag system, turn signals, and/or the engine starting system in addition to false instrument cluster warnings. This is caused by a weak retention force of the wiring harness connector terminals, that results in an electrical communication disruption between various vehicle control modules.
Depending on the specific connector terminal(s) affected by the electrical communication disruption, the passenger frontal air bags may not deploy when a crash occurs, turn signal lights may become inoperable, and/or the engine cannot be restarted. Please refer the Repair Procedure document on MGSS for further details.

Motor Corporation has decided to conduct a Safety and Emissions Recall Campaign on certain 201 8 Mazda
CX-9 vehicles, produced from September 12, 201 7 through November 9, 2017 affecting 7,854 U.S. and U.S. Territory vehicles.
Action Required:
Currently there are 44 unsold affected vehicles that are in dealer inventory or arriving to your dealership. These vehicles must not be delivered to customers until the recall repair has been completed. On Monday, June 3rd Mazda
will place a push sales orders to the dealers who have affected vehicles in their inventory. As a reminder, all vehicles under this recall will show as “Not Launched” status in eMDCS, but can be repaired as parts are currently available for ordering.
Concern Outline:

Motor Corporation has decided that a defect which relates to motor vehicle safety exists in certain 2018 model year CX-9 vehicles produced from September 12, 2017 through November 9, 2017.
If you received this notice, your vehicle is included in this Recall.
What is the problem?
On certain subject vehicles, malfunctions can occur in the passenger frontal air bag system, turn signals, and/or the engine starting system in addition to false instrument cluster warnings. This is caused by weak retention force of wiring harness connector terminals, resulting in electrical communication disruption between various vehicle control modules.
Depending on the specific connector terminal(s) affected by the electrical communication disruption, the passenger frontal air bags may not deploy when a crash occurs, increasing the risk of injury, turn signal lights may become inoperable, increasing the risk of crash, and/or the engine cannot be restarted.
What will Mazda
do?
Protect What Is Important To You
Your Mazda
dealer will repair the wiring harness connector terminals using a repair kit. The repair will be performed at no cost to you.
How long will it take?
It will take approximately two hours to complete the repair; however, your Mazda
dealer may need your vehicle for a longer period of time.
Mazda
will provide alternate transportation, if needed, when your vehicle is at an authorized Mazda
dealership for a recall repair. Schedule an appointment with an authorized Mazda
dealer so they can discuss and accommodate your needs.
What should you do?
Mazda
is concerned about your safety, and we encourage you to contact any authorized Mazda
dealer to schedule an appointment to have your Mazda
vehicle repaired as soon as possible. You do not need to bring this notice to the dealer, but it may assist in the check-in process.
Emission Law Information: To ensure your full protection under the emission warranty made applicable to your vehicle by State or Federal Law, you should have this recall completed as soon as possible. Failure to do so could be determined as lack of proper maintenance of your vehicle. Also, your vehicle may fail a state or local emission inspection if this recall is not completed.
Important notice to owners registering vehicles in California and Massachusetts: California Department of Motor Vehicles and the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, in conjunction with the California Air Resources Board and the Environmental Protection Agency for the State of Massachusetts, have implemented the Registration Renewal/Recall Tie-In Program, which requires the completion of Emission Recalls prior to registration renewal.
