MULTI-MODEL – CHIRP / CLUNK NOISE FROM REAR SHOCK ABSORBERS
APPLICABLE MODEL(S)/VINS
2013-2015 CX-5 vehicles with VINs lower than JM3 KE ****** 490722 (produced before June 06, 2014)
2014-2015 Mazda6 vehicles with VINs lower than JM1 GJ ****** 192204 (produced before June 11, 2014)
Chirp/clunk type noise from the rear shock absorbers (A) when driving on a rough road or passing over a speed bump.
Visual inspection of the shock absorbers show no external damage.
REPAIR PROCEDURE
- Remove the rear shock absorber. Refer to MS3 online or Workshop Manual section 02-14.
NOTE: Only remove the affected side.
- Disassemble the rear shock absorber assembly. Separate the shock absorber (A) bump stopper (B) and dust cover (if applicable) (C).
NOTE: The shock absorber and nut will be replaced.
- Clean the bore of the bump stopper (A) using shop towels (B) and a shop air gun (C).
- Apply rubber grease (A) to the rod end area of the new shock absorber (B).
- Insert the shock absorber rod to the bump stopper and rotate the shock absorber so that the grease spreads all the way in the bump stopper.
- Remove the shock absorber from the bump stopper and wipe off the excess grease on the rod.
- Assemble the shock absorber to the bump stopper and tighten the new nut to the specified torque.
Tightening torque: 13.5 – 16.5 Nm {1.38 – 1.68 kgf m, 9.96 – 12.1 ft lbf}.
- Install the dust boot (when applicable).
- Install the rear shock absorber assembly. Refer to MS3 online or Workshop Manual section 02-14.
