Damaged ABS Hydraulic Control Unit

Summary
Mazda North American Operations (Mazda) is recalling certain 2022-2023 CX-30 and 2023 CX-50 vehicles. The anti-lock brake system (ABS) Hydraulic Control Unit (HCU) may be damaged, which can result in reduced braking ability.
Remedy
Dealers will inspect and replace the ABS HCU, as necessary, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed June 12, 2023. Owners may contact Mazda customer service at 1-800-222-5500 Option 6. Mazda’s number for this recall is 5823D.

Chronology :
December 8, 2022: Mazda de Mexico Vehicle Operation (“MMVO”) received a part collection request from the supplier due to a concern detected in the manufacturing process for HCUs used in CX-30 vehicles.
December 9, 2022~March 2, 2023: MMVO investigated the concern to determine if any CX-30 vehicles may have received an affected part.
March 3, 2023~April 12, 2023: Mazda identified a CX-50 vehicle in the field which received an affected part.
Further investigation was conducted to determine if additional CX-50 vehicles may have received an affected part. Additionally, Mazda finalized the affected population.
April 13, 2023: Mazda held a Quality Audit Committee meeting to review all available information to date and determined to conduct a proactive field action on certain MY 2023 CX-30 and CX-50 vehicles.
April 26, 2023: Mazda is amending this P573 report to provide the following summary –
Mazda is not aware of any warranty claims or field reports related to this concern.
Mazda is not aware of any reports of accident or injury related to this concern.

Safety Recall – 2022-2023 CX-30 AND 2023 CX-50 Brake Pedal Travel May Increase
CONDITION OF CONCERN: The Anti-lock Braking System Hydraulic Control Unit (“ABS HCU”)
may be damaged which can increase brake pedal travel length and reduce braking ability, which can
increase the risk of a crash.
OUTLINE OF REPAIR: For subject CX-30 vehicles, check the serial number of the ABS HCU with the

On all CX-30 vehicles, you must use the Repair Calculator for recall 5823D available
in MGSS. The requirements to complete the inspection of this repair are below:

Air Bag Connectors and Battery Disconnect: Do not work on the vehicle without
disconnecting the vehicle battery as this could result in damage to the vehicle or
safety systems.
Customer Personal Items: If personal belongings need to be removed from vehicle interior
trunk area or inside, please remember to neatly replace any customer items in the same
location after the repair is completed.
Damage to interior or exterior: Care should be taken, and protective cover(s) used when
working on any Mazda vehicle. Damage to any components, interior trim, body panels and
paint will not be reimbursed by Mazda.
All of these items above could delay repairs, compromise safety, as well as negatively affect the

Mazda Motor Corporation has decided that a defect which relates to motor vehicle safety exists in certain 2022-2023MY CX-30 vehicles and 2023MY CX-50 vehicles. The Anti-lock Braking System Hydraulic Control Unit (“ABS HCU”) may be damaged which can increase brake pedal travel length and reduce braking ability, which can increase the risk of a crash. What will Mazda do? Protect What Is Important To You For subject CX-30 vehicles, your Mazda dealer will check the serial number of the ABS HCU of your vehicle and if it has an affected serial number, the part will be replaced with a new one. For subject CX-50 vehicles, your Mazda dealer will replace the ABS HCU with a new one as it has been already verified to be an affected unit. The repair will be performed free of charge and at no cost to you. How long will it take? It will take approximately half an hour to complete the inspection, and if replacement of the ABS HCU is necessary, it will take approximately two hours to complete the repair; however, your Mazda dealer may need your vehicle for a longer period of time. Mazda will provide alternate transportation, if needed, when your vehicle is at an authorized Mazda dealership for a recall repair. For CX-30 only 2,401 VI N’s in this campaign are affected by the recall with approximately ninety-one requiring a replacement ABS HCU. Concern Outline: When attempting to stop the vehicle, the increased brake pedal travel length may cause a feeling of reduced braking ability, increasing the risk of a crash. The expected number of CX-30 vehicles to be repaired is less than 4% or approximately 91 out of 2,401 affected vehicles. STOP SALE Mazda Dealer Action Requested: There are 124, CX-30 vehicles in dealer inventory. All Mazda dealers must quarantine any affected in-stock vehicles until the inspection with the SST is completed. The affected dealer inventory list is available on MGSS and was provided to your District Service Manager. The recall team is planning to ship SST Tools to all dealers with affected in-stock inventory as soon as possible. We will then ship the remaining tools to Mazda dealers in mid-May 2023. For All Subject Vehicles: A working laptop (preferred) or desktop computer with Windows 7 or 10 and Microsoft Excel or Google Sheets is needed for the repair. On CX-30 vehicles, the serial number of the ABS HCU will need to be checked with a Special Service Tool (SST) that will be sent to each 47 Mazda dealer. If the ABS HCU has an affected serial number, the part will need to be replaced. For all affected CX-50 vehicles, the ABS HCU must be replaced. CX-30 In-Stock Vehicles STOP SALE Mazda Dealer Action Requested: There are 96, CX-30 vehicles at 81 Mazda dealers. We will be shipping SST Tools to repair the affected dealer inventory today, arriving within the next few days to your dealership Service Manager. The tool must be stored in your Tool Shed with the other remaining Mazda Diagnostic Tools. A working laptop with Windows 7 or 10 and Microsoft Excel or Google Sheets (for the Repair Calculator) is required for the repair. Repair Procedures are available on Mazda Global Service Support (MGSS) and once the vehicle has a completed repair inspection, the vehicle can be sold. The SST tools will arrive in an 8″ x 5″ x 3″ box shipped on either June 8th or 9th from our fulfillment vendor, ‘The DOT Printer”, and with a Santa Ana, CA address. This SST Tool is provided free of charge but will be requested back by Mazda at a later date. 2.
