Seat Lifter Links may Crack or Separate
If the driver cannot maintain an appropriate driving position, there is an increased risk of a crash.
Summary
Mazda North American Operations (Mazda
) is recalling certain 2011 Mazda2 and 2010-2011 Mazda3 and Mazdaspeed3 vehicles.
In the affected vehicles, the seat height adjustment lifter links may break or detach from the seat frame and the seat angle may incline causing the driver to not be able to maintain an appropriate driving position.
Remedy
Mazda will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the seat lifter links and install a reinforcement bracket to the lifter links, or replace the entire seat adjuster unit, free of charge.
Notices informing owners of the safety risk began being mailed on April 7, 2017.
Remedy parts for all affected models are not currently available.
Owners will receive a notice to take their vehicles to a dealer for repair as parts are available.
Remedy parts for all vehicles are expected to be available in June 2017.
Owners may contact Mazda customer service at 1-800-222-5500.

CONDITION OF CONCERN
On the driver seat of certain 2010-2011 Mazda3 and 2011 Mazda2 vehicles, the seat height adjustment lifter link may be cracked due to insufficient strength of the lifter link or the lifter link push nuts may be separated. If the vehicle continues to be used in this condition, the seat may exhibit an abnormal noise or rattling. In the worst case, the lifter link may be broken or detached from the seat frame, causing the seat to be inclined and the driver may not be able to maintain an appropriate driving position, increasing the risk of a crash.
Dealers are instructed to inspect the front lifter links for any crack or damage, and if no crack or damage exists in the lifter links, install reinforcement brackets on the lifter links, and increase the number of push nuts for the rear seat lifter links to two per lifter link.
If any crack or damage exists in the lifter link, the seat adjuster unit needs to be replaced with a modified one. The inspection and repair must be performed on all subject vehicles at no charge to the vehicle owners.
Please refer to the Repair Procedure document on MGSS for further details.

D. INSPECTION AND REPAIR PROCEDURE
- Remove the front seat. Refer to the instructions on MGSS (FRONT SEAT REMOVAL/INSTALLATION).
- Remove the lower cover (A).
a. Remove the screw and fastener (both sides).
b. Remove the lower cover.
Inspection Procedure A
- Check the bottom side of the seat and see if there is any damage to the welds (C) on the lifter link (A) or stabilizer (B).
- Check the lifter links on both front sides of the seat.
- If the stabilizer or lifter link is damaged [stabilizer (A) is cracked or broken (B) / sub slider unit link or stabilizer is cracked or broken (C) at welding points (D)], replace the front seat slide adjuster unit (****88H50) with a modified one. Refer to the instructions on MGSS (FRONT SEAT SLIDE ADJUSTER REMOVAL/INSTALLATION).
- If the lifter link or stabilizer is NOT damaged, go to Inspection Procedure B.
Inspection Procedure (B)
- Check the bottom side of the seat and see if any push nuts (A) are loose or missing on the front side (F) or rear side (R).
NOTE: After completing this Inspection Procedure, it should be confirmed that 1or 2 push nut(s) is/are installed on each front side and 2 push nuts are installed on each rear side.
Samples of push nut installed correctly and loose or missing:
- Check the condition and number of push nuts on the front side (2 locations), then go to next step.
- If a push nut is loose or missing, check the clearance and replace or add a push nut. Refer to the Repair Procedure A for checking clearance and removing/installing push nuts.
- If 1 push nut is installed on each side, do not add anymore. But if 2 push nuts are installed on one front side and one push nut is installed on the other front side, install another push nut so there are 2 push nuts on each side. Refer to the Repair Procedure A for installing push nuts.
- Check the condition and number of the push nuts on the rear side (2 locations), then go to Repair Proce-dure B.
- If a push nut is loose or missing, replace the push nut with new one. Refer to the Repair Procedure A for checking clearance and removing/installing push nuts.
- If 2 push nuts are installed on each rear side, do not add anymore. But if 1 push nut is installed on either rear side, add 1 push nut to that side. Refer to Repair Procedure A for installing push nuts.
Repair Procedure A
Removing a push nut:
- Insert a flat head screwdriver (A) between the push nut and the adjuster link, then hit the screwdriver with a hammer.
- Remove the push nut with pliers.
Installing a push nut:
- Install a push nut (A) by using a 19mm socket (B) and a hammer (C) and hitting both sides (with the assistance of another person).
NOTE:
- When installing the push nut (A), reuse the nylon washer (B) (D651-88-625).
- If the nylon washer is missing, use a new one.
- Be careful not to get grease on the slide adjuster shaft (C).
Checking clearance:
Measure clearance | 1 Push nut (clearance not OK if 1.5 mm or less) | 2 Push nuts (clearance not OK if 0.5 mm or less) |

Repair Procedure B
- Attach the reinforcement plate to the stabilizer bar (A).
a. Hook the side plate (A) to stabilizer (J). The side plates are stamped with (R) and (L) for right and left sides.
b. At Point (B), attach the side plate to the shaft of the sub slider unit link.
c. Attach the seat bracket (C) to hold the sub slider unit link and tighten the lock bolt (D).
I: Lifter Link
J: Stabilizer bar
K: Link of sub slider unit
Tightening torque: 11.6 -16.6 ft.lbs. (15.7 – 22.6 Nm)
NOTE: The side plate (A) and the seat bracket (C) have (R) and (L) stamps for right and left sides. Make sure to install them on the correct side. If the right side and the left side are installed incorrectly, the bracket will interfere with the lifter and will not operate.
d. Confirm that at Point (E), the side bracket rest on the sub slider unit link.
CORRECT: Side bracket rest on the sub slider unit link. | INCORRECT: Side bracket does NOT rest on the sub slider unit link causing the bracket to float. |
![]() | ![]() |
e. Attach the LEG plate (F) to hold the stabilizer (J) and tighten the 2 bolts (G).
NOTE: Pay attention to the direction of the LEG plate (F) when installing.
Tightening torque: 5.6 -9 ft.lbs. (7.8- 10.8 Nm)
NOTE: Mazda2s repaired using TSB 09-043/12 (DRIVER SEAT RATTLE NOISE WHEN STOPPING OR STARTING THE VEHICLE) have a special spring with a long side and short side to reduce seat free play. When mounting the bracket, adjust the spring position so that the long side of the spring can fit in the groove (H) of the bracket on the stabilizer bar.
NOTE: Step by step pictures showing the installation of the side plate.
