Parking Brake Actuators may Corrode

If the parking brake actuator shaft binds, the parking brake may not engage or disengage fully. If the parking brake does not engage properly, the vehicle may move unexpectedly if it is parked on a slope, increasing the risk of a crash.

Summary

Mazda North American Operations (Mazda) is recalling certain 2014-2015 Mazda6 and 2014-2016 Mazda3 vehicles.

Water could possibly enter the brake caliper causing the parking brake actuator shaft to corrode and possibly bind.

Remedy

Mazda will notify owners, and dealers will check the parking brake actuator shafts, replacing any that are corroded, free of charge.

The recall is expected to begin August 21, 2017.

Owners may contact Mazda customer service at 1-800-222-5500.

Mazda’s number for this recall is 1217F.

Attention: Mazda General Managers, Parts and Service Managers
Subject: 2014-2017 Mazda3 and 2014-2015 Mazda6 Mechanical Rear Parking Brake Sticking Concern Safety Recall 1217F

On June 22, 2017, Mazda Motor Corporation decided to conduct a Voluntary Safety Recall Campaign to address a concern with 2014-2017 Mazda3 and 2014-2015 Mazda6 equipped with a conventional lever actuated rear parking brake.

Concern Outline:

On the mechanical (cable) type parking brake, the parking brake actuator shaft may rust resulting in increased sliding resistance of the actuator shaft or a stuck actuator shaft.  This is due to an inappropriate sealing performance of the rear brake caliper protective boot, particularly in cold temperatures, which could allow water to enter the brake caliper and cause the parking brake actuator shaft to rust. If the vehicle’s rear parking brake has this concern, the parking brake holding force may be insufficient to hold the vehicle if parked on a slope or hill resulting in unexpected movement.
