Summary

Mazda North American Operations (Mazda) is recalling certain 2019 Mazda3 vehicles. The seat cover material on both front seats may interfere with the head restraint lock release button, causing it to stick in the release position and not allow the head restraint to lock into place.

 

Remedy

Mazda will notify owners, and dealers will install spacers at the bottom of the lock release buttons on both front seat head restraints, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin September 3, 2019. Owners may contact Mazda customer service at 1-800-222-5500, option 4. Mazda’s number for this recall is 3819F.

Subject: 2019 Mazda3 Head Restraint Concern – Safety Recall 3819F

Mazda Motor Corporation has decided to conduct a Safety Recall Campaign on certain Mexico produced 2019 Mazda3 vehicles within the VIN range below, affecting 9,430 U.S. and U.S. Territory vehicles.

Action Required:

Currently there are 6,629 unsold affected vehicles that are in dealer inventory or arriving to your dealership. This list will post on MGSS by July 9, 2019.  These vehicles must not be delivered to customers until the recall repair has been completed.

As a reminder, all vehicles under this recall will show as “Not Launched” status in eMDCS, but can be repaired.  Please remember that the vehicle can be delivered once the recall repair has been completed.  Even though the RDR recall warning will still display, the warranty claim to close the recall is not required to be entered into eMDCS to RDR the vehicle and can be submitted once Parts and Warranty information is available.

 

Concern Outline:

Due to improper installation of the seat cover material of the front driver and passenger seatbacks, the material may interfere with the head restraint lock release button, causing the button to be stuck in the release position. In this condition, the head restraint can be moved freely, without the ability to lock the vertical height adjustment at a desired position.

If a crash were to occur, the head restraint could become loose and injure occupants in the vehicle.

 

Owner Notification:

Mazda will notify owners of affected vehicles by first class mail no later than September 3, 2019.  Owners will be asked to bring their vehicle to the nearest Mazda dealership for repairs.

 

Important Safety Notice:

The National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act prohibits the delivery of any subject vehicle without performing the necessary repair for defects or failures. Failure to perform applicable recalls before delivery can result in extensive dealer fines and penalties from the Federal Government. Therefore, you must complete this recall for all affected vehicles in your inventory prior to delivery.

To help you effectively perform this recall, Mazda has developed the following resources:

  1. Affected unsold VIN list will post on MGSS by July 9, 2019. Parts and Warranty information, Repair procedures will post on MGSS (Mazda Global Service Support) websites via MXConnect on July 9, 2019.
  2. For warranty questions, contact the Warranty Hotline at (877) 727-6626, Option 3.
  1. Vehicles will display in eMDCS as “Not Launched” on July 9, 2019. Once Parts and Repair procedures are posted, claims can be input into eMDCS however, repairs MUST be completed on in-stock units and can be completed on customer vehicles that exhibit the condition or that cannot wait.

Please make certain the appropriate personnel in your dealership are aware of these resources and are familiar with the details of this recall before responding to customer inquiries.

CONDITION OF CONCERN

On certain subject vehicles, due to improper installation of the seat cover material of the front driver and passenger seatbacks, the material may interfere with the head restraint lock release button, causing the button to be stuck in the release position. In this condition, the head restraint can be moved freely, without the ability to lock the vertical height adjustment at a desired position.

If a crash were to occur, the head restraint could become loose and injure occupants in the vehicle.

OUTLINE OF REPAIR

Install plastic support plates at the bottom of the lock release buttons on both front seat head restraints to prevent the seat cover material from interfering with the lock release button.

Note: Some vehicles may have the support plate on one side (driver or passenger side). If this is the case, install a support plate on the other side (no support plate) only.

  1. Remove the head rest at driver seat and passenger seat. Press knob to release the head rest.

  1. Confirm if the seat has the felt.
    • If installed with the felt at driver side or/and passenger side (shown below), go to procedure 3
    • If not installed with the felt driver side and passenger side (shown below), go to ‘Check the support plate at driver side or passenger side has been installed already’.

  1. Take the flat screwdriver and mask a flat area with tape to prevent damage the trim and pole guide.

  1. Place the clean micro fiber between the pole guide and front back.

  1. Insert a flat screwdriver between the pole guide and the felt. Push slowly in a vertical direction with the flat screwdriver to remove the pole guide felt.

  1. Take the felt with a finger and remove the micro fiber. Assure remove the all felt.

Check the support plate at the driver side or passenger side has been installed already.

 

  1. Check the support plate at the driver side and passenger side to observe from VIEW A, B, C.
  • If the support plate has not been installed at driver side and passenger side, install the support plate at both sides. Go to ‘Install the support plate at driver side and/or passenger side.’
  • If the support plate has been installed already at driver side or passenger side, no further action is required at its side. Install the support plate to another side. Go to next procedure.

  1. Verify the trim color and support plate is same.

  1. Install the support plate on the other side (passenger side).
    • Repeat procedure 2 to 6 then go to procedure 7.
    • If already installed at another side, go to procedure 7.

※ Support plates must be installed at both side.

  1. Install the head rest at driver seat and passenger seat.
  2. Pull up the head rest at highest lock position. Verify the head rest does not come out completely at highest lock position.
