MULTI-MODEL – ENGINE OIL LEAK FROM DRAIN PLUG

APPLICABLE MODEL(S)/VINS

2012-2013 Mazda3 vehicles equipped with SKYACTIV-G 2.0L engine

2014 Mazda3 (Japan built) vehicles equipped with SKYACTIV-G 2.0L engine with VINs lower than JM1 BM ****** 111726 (produced before September 05, 2013)

2013-2014 CX-5 vehicles equipped with SKYACTIV-G 2.0L engine with VINs lower than JM3 KE ****** 388590 (produced before September 05, 2013)

Vehicles equipped with SKYACTIV-G 2.0L engine may experience engine oil seepage from drain plug after the engine oil is replaced even if the plug is tightened to the specified torque with a new gasket.

Oil pan drain plug tightening torque: 30-41 N·m {3.1-4.1 kgf·m, 23-30 ft·lbf}

 

Seating surface of the oil pan for the drain plug may have poor flatness due to improper spot welding and/or the surface may have gotten a scratch during manufacturing process.

 

REPAIR PROCEDURE

  1. Replace the engine oil pan. Refer to MS3 online or Workshop Manual section 01-11.
