MULTI-MODEL – WHINING NOISE FROM AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE
APPLICABLE MODEL(S)/VINS
2012-2013 Mazda3 (SKYACTIV A/T)
2014 Mazda3 (Japan built SKYACTIV A/T) with VINS lower than JM1BM1K73E1144608 (produced before November 11, 2013)
2013-2014 CX-5 (SKYACTIV A/T) with VINS lower than JM3KE2BE3E0415164 (produced before November 11, 2013)
2014 Mazda6 (SKYACTIV A/T) with VINS lower than JM1GJ1U60E1158307 (produced before November 12, 2013)
Whining noise from the automatic transaxle when driving at 10 mph and above.
The noise:
- Depends on the vehicle’s speed only (the more speed, the more noise)
- Occurs with all types of driving (acceleration, deceleration, steady speed)
- Does not depend on rpm, gear, or ATF temperature
This is caused by a damaged bearing in the transaxle due to improper configuration of the transaxle case.
A modification has now been implemented on automatic transaxles with the serial number 3TR1111680 and higher or 3TD1104906 and higher.
The serial number can be found on top of the transaxle case near the manual shaft lever.
The following table shows how to decifer the serial number. Example 3TR1111680 is Nov 2013 production.

I’m happy to have come across your site giving the explanation for the whining sound on my 2012 mazda 3 skyactiv with A/t with 81,000KM. I tried to get a copy of the Technical service bulletin through Mazda Canada and they refused my request. Seeing that the warranty period is up, I have to pay for the cost of replacing the transmission. I find this unacceptable considering the age, mileage and the configuration problem with the transmission. I plan to pursue further with Mazda Canada.
Can you provide me with a copy of the actual service bulletin? If not can you confirm whether this technical service bulletin was issued for North America and whether the date indicated of Feb 27 2016 is the date of the actual bulletin? Thanking you in advance.
This TSB is for US might mot apply for Canada. https://static.oemdtc.com/TSB/05-005-15.pdf
What happened to your case? I’m also having the same issue I think.
