Subject: Safety Recall 9015L – Takata Passenger Air Bag Inflator
Safety Recall 9015L expands the affected vehicle population for Takata passenger air bag inflator to all 2003-2008 Mazda6 and all 2006-2007 Mazdaspeed6 vehicles nationwide. In addition, this recall also includes the following models:
- All Mazda6 and RX-8 vehicles not repaired under recalls 6913D and 7714F
- Mazda6 VINs not repaired under recall 8114L
SERVICE INFORMATION
In the subject vehicles, continued exposure to high levels of absolute humidity may cause the passenger frontal air bag inflator housing to rupture and deploy abnormally in the event of a crash necessitating deployment of the passenger frontal air bag. An inflator rupture could result in metal fragments striking and potentially seriously injuring vehicle occupants. Dealers will replace the passenger air bag inflators of subject vehicles with a new one.
Owners of vehicles involved in 9015L will be notified by first class mail by mid-February.
Recall 9015L currently displays ‘Not Launched’ status in eMDCS for the newly added VINs, and ‘OPEN’ status for subject VINs that were not repaired under recalls 6913D, 7714F, and 8114L. After the Phase I owner notification letters are mailed in February, status will change to OPEN for VINs where the owners are notified of parts availability, and status for all other VINs will change to ‘Preliminary Notification’.
- After a customer has been notified of parts availability, VIN inquiry on eMDCS will display 9015L OPEN.
- If a customer has not yet been notified of parts availability, VIN inquiry on eMDCS will display 9015L Preliminary Notification. If this customer requests the recall repair, please explain that they will receive a second notice by mail as soon as replacement parts are available for their vehicle.
Detailed parts and service information will be provided as soon as possible. Until final recall repair instructions are available, refer to the repair procedures in recall 8114L.
