2006-2013 MX-5 – WHINING NOISE FROM REAR DIFFERENTIAL

APPLICABLE MODEL(S)/VINS

2006-2013 MX-5 vehicles with VINs lower than JM1NC******233232 (produced before May 29, 2013)

Whining noise from the rear differential when driving.

The concern may be caused by improper tooth contact pattern of the rear differential gear from abnormal wear.

This abnormal wear is caused by gear tooth lapping compound (used during the production) being left on beyond the allowable amount.

The production control has been improved to reduce the amount of remaining lapping compound.

REPAIR PROCEDURE

  1. Replace the rear differential component. Refer to MS3 online instructions or Workshop Manual section 03-14.

  1. I think it would be nice to have that whining noise removed from the rear differential. I haven’t ever heard of too many problems with the rear differential but I imagine that it is always possible. I would make sure that you get the car looked at by a professional.
